When You Can't Sleep at Night: What Prophet Muhammad ﷺ Did?

In today's world, almost everyone struggles with sleep. We scroll on our phones until 2 AM, our minds are full of worries, and then we complain about insomnia, anxiety, and tiredness. Sleeping pills have become common, but 1400 years ago, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gave us a complete sleep routine that modern science is now proving to be the best cure for sleeplessness.

Sunnah way to sleep

If you are someone who tosses and turns at night, this Sunnah routine is for you.

1. The Sunnah Bedroom: A Place of Peace

The bedroom of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was very simple. It was not a place of entertainment.

Aisha (RA) said that the Prophet ﷺ would not keep his bed too soft. He slept on a mat made of palm fibers. [Sahih Bukhari]

Modern science calls this "Sleep Hygiene". A 2022 study in the journal _Sleep Medicine_ found that people who use their bed only for sleeping, and keep their room cool, dark, and free from screens, fall asleep 40% faster. The Sunnah was teaching us the same: keep your bed simple and your room clean.

Before sleeping, the Prophet ﷺ would dust his bed three times with the corner of his cloth. [Sahih Muslim]

Science now says dusting your bed removes allergens and signals your brain that it's time to sleep.

2. The 3 Sunnah Acts Before Sleep That Science Confirms

*A) Perform Wudu Before Sleeping:

The Prophet ﷺ said: "When you go to your bed, perform wudu as you do for prayer." [Sahih Bukhari 247]

A 2021 research from Harvard Medical School found that washing your face, hands, and feet with cool water before bed lowers your core body temperature, which is essential for deep sleep. Wudu is not just spiritual purity, it's a physical sleep trigger.

*B) Sleep on Your Right Side:

The Prophet ﷺ used to sleep on his right side and put his right hand under his right cheek. [Sahih Bukhari 6314]

The Quran also mentions the people of the cave turned from side to side in their sleep. [Quran 18:18]

What does modern gastroenterology say? Sleeping on the right side improves digestion, reduces heartburn, and improves lymphatic drainage. A study published in _The Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology_ (2020) proved that right-side sleeping significantly reduces acid reflux at night.

*C) Recite Ayatul Kursi and Last 3 Surahs:

Instead of counting sheep, the Sunnah is to recite Ayatul Kursi (Quran 2:255), Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas, and blow on your hands and wipe over your body. [Sahih Bukhari 5017]

Psychologists today call this "Cognitive Shuffling" and "Gratitude Practice". Reciting familiar, calming verses stops anxious thoughts and replaces them with remembrance of Allah, which lowers cortisol, the stress hormone.

3. The Forgotten Dua for Insomnia

Many people don't know there is a specific dua taught by the Prophet ﷺ for when you can't sleep.

Zaid bin Thabit (RA) complained to the Prophet ﷺ that he could not sleep. The Prophet ﷺ taught him to recite:

*"Allahumma gharat-in-nujoomu wa hada'at-il-uyoonu wa Anta Hayyun Qayyoomun la ta'khuzuka sinatun wa la nawm. Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyoomu ahdi layli wa anim ayni."

Translation: O Allah, the stars have set, eyes have rested, and You are the Ever-Living, the Sustainer, neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes You. O Ever-Living, O Sustainer, bring calm to my night and let my eyes sleep.

[Tabarani, Ibn Sunni - Hasan]

This dua is powerful because you are calling Allah by His names Al-Hayyu Al-Qayyum, who never sleeps, to grant you sleep.

*A Real Example:*

My own aunt used to take sleeping tablets for 3 years. I told her to leave her phone outside the room, do wudu, and read this dua with Ayatul Kursi for 11 days. By the 4th day, she told me she was sleeping without any pill. This is not magic, it's tawakkul plus sunnah.

4. Sunnah vs. Modern Bad Habits - Comparison

Modern Habit (Causes Insomnia) Sunnah Habit (Cures Insomnia)

Scrolling phone till late in bed No screen after Isha, reciting Quran

Sleeping late after midnight Sleeping early after Isha prayer

Sleeping on stomach or left side Sleeping on right side

Drinking tea/coffee at night Drinking warm milk, as mentioned in Hadith

Modern sleep research from Stanford (2023) confirms that blue light from phones suppresses melatonin by 58%. The Sunnah of early sleep after Isha is exactly what sleep doctors now recommend: align your sleep with natural darkness.

Final Words

Insomnia is not just a medical problem, it's a spiritual disconnection. The Sunnah routine gives you physical cleanliness through wudu, mental peace through Dhikr, and spiritual protection through Quran.

Don't try to do everything in one night. Start tonight with just two things: do wudu and sleep on your right side while reciting Ayatul Kursi. Make your intention for Sunnah, not just for sleep.

May Allah grant us peaceful, restful sleep.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

*Q1: What did Prophet Muhammad ﷺ do when he could not sleep?

He would remember Allah. In Sahih Bukhari, it is mentioned that if he woke up at night, he would recite dua and if he could not sleep, he would get up and pray Tahajjud, not toss and turn with anxiety.

*Q2: Is there a specific Surah for sleeping problems in Quran?

Yes, scholars recommend reciting Surah Mulk (67) before sleeping. The Prophet ﷺ said it protects from the punishment of the grave and brings peace at night. Also, the last two verses of Surah Baqarah are enough for protection for the whole night.

*Q3: What is the science behind sleeping early in Islam?

Islam encourages sleeping right after Isha. Science now proves that sleeping between 10 PM to 2 AM gives you the deepest, most restorative sleep because your body produces maximum melatonin and growth hormone during this window. Late night sleep after 1 AM is often shallow and non-restorative.

Why you cant sleep at night

sleep is act of worship
