*Can't Sleep at Night? 7 Islamic Duas + 3 Sunnah to Find Peace in 2026

Do you lie awake at 2am with your mind running in circles? You’re not alone.

In today’s fast world, insomnia, anxiety, and overthinking are common. But in Islam, the night is not meant for stress. It’s meant for rest, reflection, and connection with Allah.

Duas for sleep

This guide gives you 7 powerful Islamic duas and 3 Sunnah practices that scholars and Muslims have used for centuries to calm the heart and sleep peacefully.

*Why Do We Struggle to Sleep? An Islamic Perspective*

Lack of sleep isn’t just physical. In Islam, the heart and mind are connected.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that Shaytan tries to disturb us at night. Anxiety, guilt, and overthinking are whispers that keep us awake.

Allah says in the Quran:

> *"And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy."* [Quran 30:21]

That same concept of _sukoon_ or tranquility is what we need at night. Sleep is a mercy from Allah [Quran 78:9].

*7 Islamic Duas for Sleep and Anxiety*

Recite these before bed with sincerity. You don’t need to memorize all at once. Start with 1-2.

*1. Ayat-ul-Kursi - The Verse of Protection*

*Translation:* "Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence..." [Quran 2:255]

*Benefit:* The Prophet ﷺ said reciting Ayat-ul-Kursi before bed ensures Allah sends a guardian to protect you all night. [Sahih Bukhari 3275]

*2. The Last 2 Verses of Surah Al-Baqarah*

*Benefit:* Whoever recites these two verses at night, they will be sufficient for him. [Sahih Bukhari 5009]

*3. Dua for Anxiety and Distress*

*Translation:* "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow..." [Sahih Bukhari 6363]

*4. Tasbeeh of Fatimah RA*

33x SubhanAllah, 33x Alhamdulillah, 34x Allahu Akbar.

The Prophet ﷺ taught this to Fatimah RA for strength and peace before sleep. [Sahih Muslim 2727]

*5. Dua When You Wake Up at Night*

*Benefit:* Whoever wakes at night and says this, then makes dua, it will be answered. [Sahih Bukhari 1154]

*6. Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas - The 3 Quls*

Blow on your palms and wipe over your body. The Prophet ﷺ did this 3 times before sleeping. [Sahih Bukhari 5017]

*7. General Dua for Peaceful Sleep*

*Translation:* "In Your name my Lord, I lie down and in Your name I rise..." [Sahih Bukhari 6320]

*3 Sunnah Practices Before Sleeping*

Dua alone isn’t enough. The Prophet ﷺ combined dua with action.

1.  *Wudu Before Bed*

Sleeping in a state of wudu brings angels to make dua for you. [Sahih Ibn Hibban 1064]

2.  *Dust Your Bed 3 Times*

The Prophet ﷺ said to dust your bed before lying down. It removes harm and is a Sunnah of mindfulness. [Sahih Bukhari 6320]

3.  *Sleep on Your Right Side*

This was the Prophet’s ﷺ preferred position. It’s healthier and a sign of submission. [Sahih Muslim 2714]

*Bonus Tips: From Overthinking to Inner Peace at Night*

1.  *Digital Detox 1 Hour Before Bed:* The blue light increases anxiety. Replace scrolling with Quran or dhikr.

2.  *Make a "Worry List":* Write down what’s bothering you and make dua: "HasbunAllahu wa ni’mal wakeel" - Allah is sufficient for me.

3.  *Remember:* Your rizq, future, and problems are already written. Worrying won’t change them, but dua will.

*FAQs*

*Q1: What is the best dua to read when I can't sleep at night?*

A: The most recommended is "Bismika Rabbi wada'tu janbi..." [Sahih Bukhari 6320] and Ayat-ul-Kursi. Recite with the meaning in mind.

*Q2: Is insomnia mentioned in Islam?*

A: Yes. The Prophet ﷺ experienced restlessness and taught us specific duas and Sunnah for it. Anxiety at night is a test, and Allah provides the cure through remembrance.

*Q3: Can I recite these duas in English or Urdu?*

A: For duas from Quran and Hadith, Arabic is best. But you can make personal dua in any language. Allah understands all languages.

*Q4: How long before sleeping should I do these?*

A: Make it the last 5-10 minutes of your day. Do wudu, pray 2 rakah if possible, then recite the duas in bed.

*Q5: What if I wake up in the middle of the night?*

A: Say the dua of waking up at night [Sahih Bukhari 1154], then make any dua. This is a special time when duas are accepted.

*Final Words*

Sleep is a gift. Don’t let overthinking steal it from you. Start tonight with just Ayat-ul-Kursi + the 3 Quls + sleeping on your right side.

As Allah says: *"Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest."* [Quran 13:28]

May Allah grant you peaceful sleep and a heart free from worry. Ameen.
