*The Story of Ashab-e-Kahf - The People of the Cave*
*

The story of *Ashab-e-Kahf* is mentioned in *Surah Al-Kahf, verses 9-26* of the Holy Quran. It is one of the greatest signs of Allah’s power over time, life, and death.

*1. The Full Story*

Centuries ago, in a city ruled by a tyrant king who forced people to worship idols, there lived *7 young men* who believed in One Allah. The Quran calls them "Fitya" - youth with strong faith.

> *Arabic:*

> *إِذْ أَوَى الْفِتْيَةُ إِلَى الْكَهْفِ فَقَالُوا رَبَّنَا آتِنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةً وَهَيِّئْ لَنَا مِنْ أَمْرِنَا رَشَدًا*

> *Translation:* _"When the young men retreated to the cave, they said, 'Our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself and guide us to the right course in our affair.'"_

To save their faith, they fled the city and took refuge in a cave. With them was their dog.

Allah put them into a deep sleep as a miracle and protected them inside the cave for centuries.

> *Arabic:*

> *فَضَرَبْنَا عَلَىٰ آذَانِهِمْ فِي الْكَهْفِ سِنِينَ عَدَدًا*

> *Translation:* _"So We cast [a cover of] sleep over their ears in the cave for a number of years."_

Allah turned them from right to left side while they slept, and their dog was stretched out with its paws at the entrance to guard them.

> *Arabic:*

> *وَنُقَلِّبُهُمْ ذَاتَ الْيَمِينِ وَذَاتَ الشِّمَالِ وَكَلْبُهُم بَاسِطٌ ذِرَاعَيْهِ بِالْوَصِيدِ لَوِ اطَّلَعْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ لَوَلَّيْتَ مِنْهُمْ فِرَارًا وَلَمُلِئْتَ مِنْهُمْ رُعْبًا*

> *Translation:* _"And We turned them to the right and to the left, while their dog stretched its forelegs at the entrance. If you had looked at them, you would have turned from them in flight and been filled by them with terror."_

After *300 solar years + 9 lunar years = 309 years*, Allah woke them up. They thought they had slept only a day or part of a day.

> *Arabic:*

> *وَلَبِثُوا فِي كَهْفِهِمْ ثَلَاثَ مِائَةٍ سِنِينَ وَازْدَادُوا تِسْعًا*

> *Translation:* _"And they remained in their cave for three hundred years and exceeded by nine."_

They sent one of them to buy food with old coins. The people of the city were shocked to see him and the coins. This became a sign for people that resurrection after death is true.

*2. Why Did Anyone Who Saw Them Get Terrified?*

The Quran directly answers this:

> *Arabic:*

> *لَوِ اطَّلَعْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ لَوَلَّيْتَ مِنْهُمْ فِرَارًا وَلَمُلِئْتَ مِنْهُمْ رُعْبًا*

> *Translation:* _"If you had looked at them, you would have turned from them in flight and been filled by them with terror."_

*Scholars and Science give 3 reasons:*

1. *Divine Protection*: Allah placed "ru'b" - awe/terror on them so no one would disturb the cave. It was a miracle.

2. *Physical State After 300 Years*: Their hair and nails would have grown long. Being in one position for years, turning right and left automatically, and pale skin would make them look very unusual to any human.

3. *The Dog at the Entrance*: Their dog was sitting with paws stretched at the cave mouth. Ancient people considered a guard dog at a cave entrance a sign of danger.

So it was a combination of miracle + natural appearance after long sleep.

*3. The Science: How Were They Alive After 300 Years?*

The Story of Ashab-e-Kahf - The People of the Cave*

*

This is a miracle, but science explains the _mechanisms_ Allah used:

1. *Suspended Animation / Deep Sleep*: Allah put them in a state where metabolism slowed to near zero. Modern science calls this "cryo-sleep" or "torpor". Bears do it for months. Allah did it for centuries.

2. *Automatic Turning*: *وَنُقَلِّبُهُمْ ذَاتَ الْيَمِينِ وَذَاتَ الشِّمَالِ* - _"We turned them right and left"_. Medical science today confirms that bedridden patients must be turned every 2 hours to prevent bedsores and muscle decay. Allah did this for them for 309 years.

3. *Sunlight and Ventilation*: *وَتَرَى الشَّمْسَ إِذَا طَلَعَت تَّزَاوَرُ عَن كَهْفِهِمْ ذَاتَ الْيَمِينِ وَإِذَا غَرَبَت تَّقْرِضُهُمْ ذَاتَ الشِّمَالِ* - _"You would see the sun, when it rose, inclining away from their cave to the right, and when it set, passing away from them to the left"_

Science: This means the cave had perfect airflow and indirect sunlight. No direct UV to damage skin, but enough light and air to prevent decay.

4. *Preservation*: No food, no water, no aging. This is beyond current science. It shows Allah has power over biological time. The 300 + 9 years difference also shows Allah mentioned both solar and lunar calendars accurately.

Bottom line: It was a *mu'jiza* - a miracle. Science can explain _how_ the body was protected, but not _why_ it didn’t die. That is Allah’s power.

*4. Key Lessons*

1.  Faith over fear - they chose Allah over the king.

2.  Allah protects those who protect His religion.

3.  Proof of life after death and resurrection.

4.  Time is in Allah’s control.

*FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions*

*Q1: How many people were in Ashab-e-Kahf?*

*A:* The Quran does not confirm an exact number. People debated 3, 5, 7. Allah says: *وَيَقُولُونَ سَبْعَةٌ وَثَامِنُهُمْ كَلْبُهُمْ* - _"They say they were seven, and the eighth was their dog"_. The strongest opinion of scholars is 7 youth + 1 dog.

*Q2: Where is the Cave of Ashab-e-Kahf?*

*A:* The exact location is not confirmed in Quran. Many places are claimed: Jordan, Turkey, Syria. Allah kept it hidden as a sign so people focus on the lesson, not the tourism.

*Q3: Were they really asleep for 309 years?*

*A:* Yes.

*Q4: Did they eat or drink in the cave?*

*A:* No. They were in a miraculous sleep. When they woke, they were hungry and sent one person to buy food with old coins.

*Q5: What happened to them after they woke up?*

*A:* Scholars differ. Most say Allah took their souls after they gave the message. Their story became proof for the people of that time about resurrection.

*Q6: What is the main lesson for us today?*

*A:* Stand for truth even if you are few. If you leave something for Allah, Allah will protect you in ways you cannot imagine.
