*The Death of Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ: The Day the World Lost Its Light

_12 Rabi' al-Awwal, 11 AH / 8 June 632 CE

*Introduction: A Silence That Shook the Earth

History has recorded many deaths of kings, conquerors, and philosophers. But no death ever tore through the hearts of humanity the way the death of *Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ, the Last Prophet*, did.  

On that Monday morning in Madinah, the sun rose as usual. The birds sang. The markets opened. But for the believers, the world had gone dark. The man who came as _“a mercy to the worlds”_ [Qur’an 21:107] was no longer among them.  

It was not just the death of a man. It was the end of revelation. The closing of prophethood. The moment humanity was told: _“This is it. The guidance is now complete.”_  

*The Final Illness: A Prophet Who Felt the Pain of His Ummah*

The illness began after the Prophet ﷺ returned from his farewell Hajj. In the month of Safar, 11 AH, he developed a fever so severe that his companions could feel its heat through his blanket.  

Aisha RA narrates:  

_“I never saw anyone suffer more pain than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”_

He was alternating between the houses of his wives, too weak to walk. Finally, he asked for permission to stay in Aisha’s RA room. He would lie with his head in her lap, his breathing labored.  

Even in pain, his concern was not for himself. He kept asking: _“Have the people prayed?”_ Again and again. Until the very end, his heart beat for his Ummah.

*The Last Sermon at the Minbar: A Goodbye Without Saying Goodbye*

A few days before his death, the Prophet ﷺ, wrapped in a cloak, his head bandaged, walked to the minbar. The mosque was packed. The silence was heavy.  

He said:  

_“O people, I am leaving among you two things: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah. If you hold fast to them, you will never go astray.”_

He praised the Ansar and Muhajireen. He forgave debts. He freed slaves. He settled accounts. It felt like a farewell, though he never said the word.  

Then he said something that broke every heart:  

_“Allah has given a servant the choice between the world and what is with Him, and he has chosen what is with Allah.”_

Abu Bakr RA began to cry. He understood. The others did not. Not yet.

*The Last Prayer: Leading From the Bed*

As his fever worsened, he could no longer lead prayer. He instructed Abu Bakr RA to lead.  

On that last Monday, he felt a little better. He drew aside the curtain of Aisha’s RA room and saw the Muslims praying behind Abu Bakr RA. A smile appeared on his blessed face. The companions thought he had recovered. Their hearts lifted.  

But it was his final look at his Ummah in prayer.  

Aisha RA said: _“He died on the day he smiled at us in prayer.”_

*The Final Moments: “Ar-Rafiq al-A'la”*

By mid-morning, the fever returned worse than before. Aisha RA held him as he leaned against her chest. He had a small container of water beside him. He dipped his hand in it and wiped his face, whispering: _“La ilaha illa Allah. Indeed, death has its agonies.”_

Then his voice grew faint. His last words were not about himself. They were about us:  

_“The prayer, the prayer. And what your right hands possess.”_

Then: _“With the highest companion… Ar-Rafiq al-A'la.”_

And his blessed soul departed.  

The time was Duha, Monday, 12 Rabi' al-Awwal, 11 AH. He was 63 years old.

*The Shock: A Ummah That Refused to Believe*

News spread like wildfire. _“Muhammad ﷺ has died.”_  

People froze. Some sat down and could not stand. Some began to wander the streets like the mad.  

Umar RA drew his sword and declared: _“Whoever says Muhammad is dead, I will strike off his head! He has only gone to meet his Lord like Musa did!”_

The grief was not logical. It was primal. How could the light just… go out?

*Abu Bakr’s RA Speech: The Words That Brought the Ummah Back*

Into this chaos walked Abu Bakr RA. He went straight to the Prophet’s ﷺ body. He uncovered the face, kissed the forehead, and wept: 

“By Allah, you are beautiful in life and in death.”_

Then he went to the pulpit. His voice was steady, but his eyes were red.  

_“O people! Whoever worshipped Muhammad, Muhammad is dead. But whoever worships Allah, Allah is Alive and never dies.”_  

He recited:  

_“Muhammad is no more than a messenger, and messengers have passed away before him. If he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels?”_

That verse hit like cold water. Umar RA later said: _“By Allah, when I heard Abu Bakr recite it, my legs gave way and I fell to the ground. I realized he had truly died.”_

*The Burial: In the Room Where He Died*

The companions debated where to bury him. Abu Bakr RA said: _“I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: A Prophet is buried where he dies.”_

So they dug the grave in Aisha’s RA room, right beside the bed where he breathed his last.  

Ali RA, Abbas RA, and others washed his body. They shrouded him in three white sheets. No shirt. No turban. Simple, as he lived.  

He was buried that night, Tuesday. The world entered its first night without him.

*Why Did It Feel Like the End of the World?*

Because it was. 

1. *Revelation Ended*: For 23 years, Jibreel AS came down with guidance. That door was now closed forever. _“This day I have perfected for you your religion.”_

2. *The Living Qur’an Left*: The Qur’an was no longer walking among them. The character that explained the verses was gone.  

3. *The Father Figure Was Gone*: He was a father to orphans, a judge to the oppressed, a teacher to the ignorant. Who would fill that space?

4. *A Promise of Mercy Left*: Allah said: _“And We have not sent you, O Muhammad, except as a mercy to the worlds.”_ That physical mercy was now gone.

Anas RA, his servant for 10 years, said:  

_“The day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Madinah, everything in it was illuminated. And the day he died, everything in it was darkened.”_

*The Legacy He Left Behind in Death*

He left no money. No palace. No dynasty.  

He left:  

- A Book, preserved.  

- A Sunnah, recorded.  

- 114,000 companions who memorized him.  

- A message: _“Convey from me, even if it is one verse.”_

He died poor, with armor pledged to a Jew for barley. Aisha RA said: _“The Prophet ﷺ died and his shield was mortgaged for 30 sa’ of barley.”_

That is the measure of a man who changed the world and owned nothing.

*The Grief of the Companions: Stories That Break the Heart*

- *Bilal RA* could not give adhan in Madinah after that. Every time he said _“Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah”_, he would break down. He left Madinah because the streets reminded him too much.  

- *Fatima RA* stood at the grave and said: _“O Anas, how could you bear to throw dirt over the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?”_  

- *Aisha RA* would say years later: _“The smell of his sweat was better than the best perfume.”_

Their grief never left. Because losing him was not like losing a leader. It was like losing the sun.

*Lessons From His Death*

1. *Death comes to all, even the best of creation*. It reminds us this life is temporary.  

2. *The mission continues*: He did not leave us orphans. He left us the Qur’an and Sunnah.  

3. *Love him by following him*: The greatest tribute is not tears, but obedience.  

4. *Prepare for the meeting*: He said: _“A man will be with those he loves.”_ Do we love him enough to be with him?

*Conclusion: The Wound That Never Healed*

1400+ years have passed. Empires rose and fell. But every year, on 12 Rabi' al-Awwal, millions of hearts still ache.  

Because the world has never been the same since that Monday.  

The Prophet ﷺ did not die for himself. He completed his mission. He delivered the message. He fulfilled the trust.  

But for us, his departure was the greatest loss humanity has ever known. A loss of guidance, of mercy, of presence.  

May Allah reunite us with him ﷺ in Jannat al-Firdaws.  

_Allahumma salli ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad._
